The call I’d been anticipating finally came at 10.22 am. It was Glasshouse Opticians, with the exciting news that my Ray-Ban Meta – or RBMs, as those in the know call these ‘AI’ powered glasses – had arrived.

‘Would you like to unbox them yourself or have one of our Dispensing Opticians (DOs) check if your prescription lenses are correct before collection?’ I was asked.

Prioritising Prescription Accuracy at Glasshouse Opticians

Now, for some people being the first to open the box on a new gadget is almost the best part of the experience. But when you order prescription lenses (varifocal and transition) that cost more than the smart glasses themselves you really need to be sure that that part’s right.

This meticulous checking is standard practice for the Dispensing Opticians (DOs) at Glasshouse, underscoring their commitment to accurate vision for every customer. Eyecare and eye health must always be number one, with tech and fashion coming in second place.

My Experience with Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses in Milan

My visit to Essilor Luxottica’s Tortona facility in Milan earlier this week offered a fascinating glimpse into the future of wearables. I was very lucky to have witnessed the Ray-Ban Meta demos first-hand where Ray-Ban’s Elena Anapolitanou passionately described this as ‘a radical leap forward in wearables’. Seeing the demos, it’s easy to understand why. Imagine: ‘Meta AI Enhanced Experiences’ and ‘Multimodal Text Actions’ mean these RBMs can not only see what you see but also seamlessly translate conversations, summarise text, look up information, aid with pronunciation, scan QR codes, and even call phone numbers displayed in your view – all without reaching for your phone. And that’s just the so called ‘Text Actions’.

I can appreciate the blend of innovation and style these glasses represent. However, as my experience with Glasshouse Opticians shows, the foundation of accurate prescription lenses remains non-negotiable.

One More Sleep Before I Explore My New AI Glasses

With the crucial confirmation that my prescription is spot-on, tomorrow can’t come soon enough! I’m looking forward to picking up my RBMs from Glasshouse Opticians and finally putting them through their paces.

Oh, and as I was within 6 months of my next recommended eye exam, I booked a check-up before ordering my RBMs to ensure I got the most out of my new prescription lenses.
